If you go to Jerusalem there will be many great places to visit like the Western Wall and the Dome of the Rock.
The Western Wall is about 2,000 years old. People gather there to pray and observe religious holidays. The best time to go is during Shabbat when everyone is celebrating. If you see the cracks in the Western Wall are full of paper that's because people write their wishes on paper and stick them in the wall. The Dome of the Rock is the centerpiece of Jerusalem. It was built in 691 C.E. It is also the third holiest spot in the Muslim world. It is the site of a constant fight between Palestinians and Jews. In order to enter the Dome of the Rock you must be a Muslim. But you can have a great view of it from the outside via the Temple Mount.
The Dead Sea is the second saltiest body of water in the world. It's so salty that Israel gets it's salt there! It's a great tourist site especially for people who can't swim! The salt makes you so buoyant you basically float on the waters surface. The Kidron Valley divides the Jerusalem Temple Mount from the Mount of Olives which holds the oldest Jewish Cemetery and is considered by many to be one of the holiest places on Earth. In olden days olives were grown there and sold so the revenues would go to the King. Today, people are bringing olive trees there to restore what had been taken away. The Masada is the remains of a fortress located on top of an isolated plateau (rock cliff) at the western end of the Judean Desert, with a good view of the Dead Sea. It was built by Herod the Great in 31 B.C.E. It was the site of a three year battle between Romans and Jews. |
